Wayne Powers, Sr., age 68, of Unicoi, passed away Friday, August 25, 2023 at the Unicoi County Hospital. He was born August 10, 1955 in Adrian, Michigan to the late Artest Hester “Art” and Beatress “Bea” Powers.
Wayne was a loving father, grandfather, and friend to many. He was especially proud of his grandchildren and loved to brag about them at any given opportunity.
Proverbs 18:24 “A man that hath friends must shew himself friendly: and there is a friend that sticketh closer than a brother.” Which certainly applied to Wayne. He had several life-long friends, as well as cousins, that were as close as brothers who he loved, and they loved him. You rarely went to his shop that one or more of them wasn’t there sitting and talking with him.
In Wayne’s younger years he liked anything he could ride, race, or cause mischief with. His working life started with mechanical work on cars but soon after turned into forty years of paint and body work. He always took great pride in his work, whether it was fixing a door ding on someone’s car or a full piece by piece restoration. His paint jobs can be found at many car shows and cruise-ins throughout East Tennessee and Western North Carolina. Wayne enjoyed watching UT Football, NASCAR, and old westerns. Some of his favorite things to do was going to any kind of drag racing or car show, like the Super Chevy Show or The Rod Runs in Pigeon Forge.
Wayne loved his friends and family unconditionally and will be greatly missed.
In addition to his parents, Wayne was preceded in death by one sister-in-law, Roxana Powers.
Wayne is survived by his one son, Wayne Powers, Jr. and wife Heather; two grandchildren: Chloe Powers and Corbin Powers; one brother, Michael Powers; one sister, Suzie Adkins and husband, Floyd; several nieces and nephews, and his longtime best friend, Brenda Taylor.
Wayne’s family and friends will gather at the Unicoi Funeral Home from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. Wednesday, August 30, 2023 to share memories and Celebrate Wayne’s Life.
