Shelia Janice Owens Ricker (79) entered into rest on Friday January 5th 2024, at the Center on Aging. She finally won her long battle with illness after suffering with the effects of a stroke. She was the daughter of the late Carl and Daisy Owens, Kingsport TN.
To most of her family and friends she was known as Janice or Jan. She was a native of Kingsport, TN, where she attended Dobyns Bennett High School. Jan also spent many years as an Air Force wife living in lots of places around the US. Eventually settling in Gray, TN with her family.
She spent time working as a preschool teacher and as a library office manager for Milligan College. She was a huge supporter of her children’s activities, especially the school marching band. Janice enjoyed reading, music, and sewing. She also loved traveling with her daughters, friends, and cousins. Trips to the beach, NYC, and concerts were her favorite things. But when she retired from her job at Milligan College, she became a full time Nonni. She cherished her time with her grandsons and loved spoiling them rotten.
Janice was preceded in death by her husband, Harold J Ricker, Staff Tech sergeant USAF.
She is survived by her brother Keith Owens and his wife Jenny, Kingsport TN. Two daughters: Janette M Ricker, Hiram, GA and Elana R Ferracane, husband Patrick, Durham, NC; one son, Darren J Ricker, wife Heather Erwin, TN; her beloved grandsons Draven Ricker, Munro Ricker, and Oziah Ricker; along with several nephews and nieces.
The Ricker Family will have a small visitation on Wednesday January 10th 2024, from 4:00-6:00 p.m. at Robert Ledford Funeral Home in Erwin, TN. A private family committal will be held at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in memory of Sheila to: St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, Memorial Department, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, Tennessee 38105 or online at www.stjude.org.
