Myra Harris Obituary

Myra Lynn Powers Harris, age 78, went to be with her precious Lord Jesus on Monday, November 13, 2023, while she was surrounded by her loving family at her residence. She is a daughter of the late Glavis A. Powers and Chloe Bailey Powers. Myra lived most of her life in Erwin, however, she often referred to the best time of her life as living in Jonesborough with her children where they raised cattle, grew a large garden, and canned.

She loved the Lord with all her heart and her faith never wavered. Myra was a member of Lily Dale Church of Christ. She was the foundation of her home because she was a loving, devoted and nurturing wife, mother, and grandmother. Myra always saw the best in everyone and loved everyone wholeheartedly. She had a beautiful heart and shared her profound wisdom with everyone she knew.  Myra’s optimism and faith always prevailed regardless of the difficult challenges she was faced with throughout her life.

She loved nature in so many wonderful ways such as: smelling the fragrant air after a good rain, walking barefoot in a freshly plowed garden, feeding the beautiful Bluebirds, Hummingbirds and Finches which always brought a smile to her face. Actually, Myra didn’t put shoes on her feet until winter, she just enjoyed feeling the ground beneath her feet.

Myra was an amazing cook and she absolutely enjoyed preparing meals for her family and friends. She always said cooking was therapy for her and no one ever complained about her “therapy lessons” after they feasted on one of her delectable meals! Myra was known for her delicious mashed potatoes, potato salad, canned green beans, pecan pie and sweet tea. Myra’s scrumptious food was well known and often requested by her neighbors in the Martin’s Creek Community. She was an angel on earth who is now sweetly singing praises to her precious Lord with the heavenly angel choir.

In addition to her parents, Myra was preceded in death by her husband of fifty-nine years, Gary Damon Harris; two brothers: Noel A. Powers and Gerald Powers; three sisters: Eleanor Powers Cash, Jan Corn Deaton, and Teresa Renee Powers.

Myra leaves behind to cherish many wonderful memories, her three children: Lisa Tipton (John) of Erwin, Joel Harris (Toni) of Johnson City and Kerry Casteel (William) of Erwin; three grandchildren: Annie Harris, Seth Honeycutt, and Damon Harris, all of Erwin; great grandchildren: Madison Runyon and Gracie Runyon; one brother, David Powers (Bianca) of Oak Park, IL; three sisters: Etta Norton of Bluefield, WV, Mary Kay Broyles (Elden) and Rebecca Sayer (Darrell), all of Erwin; two brothers-in-law: James Harris (Paula) and Wesley Harris (Mary); her beloved best friend, fur baby and companion, Miso; five grand pups; several nieces and nephews also survive.

Private family services will be held for Myra.
