Larry Vaughan Obituary

Larry Charles Vaughan, age 80, of Erwin, passed away on Thursday, January 02, 2025, at the Johnson City Medical Center. He was a native of Kingsport and son of the late Roy Vaughan and Grace Baker Vaughan. Shortly after Larry married his wife, Marilyn, fifty-six years ago they bought their first home in Erwin.

He was a United States Army Veteran having served his country honorably. During his military service as a Military Policeman, he was awarded a National Defense Service Medal, Good Conduct Medal, Expert Marksman Badge (M14 Rifle) and Sharpshooter Badge (.45 Caliber Pistol).

Larry earned his Bachelor of Science Degree in Psychology. He began his career as a Mental Health Counselor which moved his family to various states over the years. Larry worked as a counselor in group homes, prisons, and homes for children.

He enjoyed woodworking and Larry was very talented with his hands. Larry could fix anything that was broken. He liked to watch NASCAR and sing gospel music. Larry sang bass and was a member of the Glee Club in his younger years. He also played basketball when he was younger.

Larry was a member of First Baptist Church in Kingsport.

In addition to his parents, Larry was preceded in death by one brother, Arnold Vaughan.

Survivors include his wife of fifty-six years, Marilyn Carty Vaughan; four sons: James K. Vaughan (Judy), of Florence, Kentucky, Ryan D. Vaughan, of Castlewood, Virginia, Aaron J. Vaughan (Wendy) of Pound, Virginia, and Clinton C. Vaughan of Erwin; three grandchildren: Alivia Missal (Jude), Cheyenne Vaughan, and Ethan Vaughan; one great grandchild, Reno Missal; two brothers: Roy Kenneth Vaughan, Michael Vaughan (Debbie); one sister, Barbara Alynne Burns; several nieces and nephews also survive.

Larry’s family will receive friends on Wednesday, January 08, 2025, from 12:00-1:00 p.m. at the funeral home. Pastor Joe Sluss will officiate the 1:00 p.m. funeral service. Pastor Ralph Crass and his wife, Judy will provide the musical selections. Interment will follow in the Evergreen Cemetery. Military honors will be rendered by DAV Chapter 39 Honor Guard. Family and friends will serve as pallbearers.
