Jovita Leon (Olmedo-Cortina), age 60 of Erwin, Tennessee passed away peacefully on December 16, 2024, surrounded by her family at Johnson City Medical Center after a long, courageous battle with cancer. Jovita was born on February 15, 1964, in Veracruz, Mexico.
Jovita was preceded in death by her mother and father Pilar Cortina Salazar and Roberto Olmedo Arcos; brother, Nicolas Olmedo and sister, Erlinda Olmedo.
She is survived by her loving husband of thirty-one years, Jose Leon. She is also survived by her three sons; Josue Olmedo (Chadwick), Christian Leon (Lily), and Jose Arturo Leon; one daughter, Laura Johnston (Joshua); one stepson, Jose Leon Jr. (Damaris); two granddaughters: June and Lucero; two grandsons: Joseph and Mason.
Jovita comes from a large family and is survived by several brothers and sisters: Dormitila Olmedo, Gavina Olmedo, Maria Olmedo, Margarita Olmedo, Fidencio Olmedo, Eva Olmedo, Victoria Olmedo, Efren Olmedo, Margaro Olmedo, Juana Olmedo; she is also survived by many nieces, nephews, godchildren, and very special friends.
Jovita was a devout Catholic. She had a love for the color purple and enjoyed spending as much time as she could in the sun. She loved being with her family, especially around any holiday or special event so that everyone could be together. Anyone that knew Jovita knew her love, and passion for cooking including her perfect ability for making tamales. She loved spending time with her grandchildren and being the very best abuela that she could be. Any extra time she had, she would spend it helping her church with arts and crafts or spending time with her family and friends.
The family would like to thank everyone for their prayers and continued prayers in the days to come. Also, a very special thank you to the medical staff at Johnson City Medical Center and Cancer Center over the past several years.
Jovita’s family will receive friends on Thursday, December 19, 2024, from 6:00-8:00 p.m. at the funeral home. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, December 20, 2024, at St. Michael the Archangel Catholic Church. Interment will follow in the Evergreen Cemetery. Family and friends will serve as pallbearers. Those wishing to attend Jovita’s Mass of Christian Burial should meet at the church by 10:45 a.m. on Friday.

Jovita León (Olmedo-Cortina), de 60 años, de Erwin, Tennessee, falleció pacíficamente el 16 de diciembre de 2024, rodeada de su familia en el Centro Médico Johnson City después de una larga y valiente batalla contra el cáncer. Jovita nació el 15 de febrero de 1964 en Veracruz, México.
Jovita fue precedida en la muerte por su madre y padre, Pilar Cortina Salazar y Roberto Olmedo Arcos; hermano, Nicolás Olmedo y hermana, Erlinda Olmedo.
Le sobrevive su amado esposo de treinta y un años, José León. También le sobreviven sus tres hijos; Josué Olmedo (Chadwick), Christian León (Lily) y José Arturo León; una hija, Laura Johnston (Joshua); un hijastro, José León Jr. (Damaris); dos nietas: June y Lucero; dos nietos: Joseph y Mason.
Jovita proviene de una familia numerosa y le sobreviven varios hermanos y hermanas: Dormitila Olmedo, Gavina Olmedo, Maria Olmedo, Margarita Olmedo, Fidencio Olmedo, Eva Olmedo, Victoria Olmedo, Efren Olmedo, Margaro Olmedo, Juana Olmedo; también le sobreviven muchas sobrinas, sobrinos, ahijados y amigos muy especiales.
Jovita era una católica devota. Amaba el color morado y disfrutaba pasar todo el tiempo que podía al sol. Le encantaba estar con su familia, especialmente en días festivos o eventos especiales para que todos pudieran estar juntos. Cualquiera que conociera a Jovita conocía su amor y pasión por la cocina, incluida su habilidad perfecta para hacer tamales. Le encantaba pasar tiempo con sus nietos y ser la mejor abuela que podía ser. Cualquier tiempo extra que tenía, lo dedicaba a ayudar a su iglesia con manualidades o a pasar tiempo con su familia y amigos.
La familia quisiera agradecer a todos por sus oraciones y oraciones continuas en los días venideros. Además, un agradecimiento muy especial al personal médico del Centro Médico y del Centro Oncológico Johnson City durante los últimos años.
La familia de Jovita recibirá a sus amigos el jueves 19 de diciembre de 2024, de 6:00 a 8:00 p. m. en la funeraria. Se llevará a cabo una misa de entierro cristiano a las 11:00 a. m. el viernes 20 de diciembre de 2024 en la iglesia católica St. Michael the Archangel. El entierro se realizará en el cementerio Evergreen. La familia y los amigos servirán como portadores del féretro. Aquellos que deseen asistir a la misa de entierro cristiano de Jovita deben reunirse en la iglesia antes de las 10:45 a. m. del viernes.
