John Dudley Miller, age 92, of Erwin went to his heavenly home on Thursday, July 13, 2023, while he was surrounded by his family. He was a native of Unicoi County and a son of the late Ernest and Ethel Higgins Miller.
John retired from the United States Air Force where he served his country honorably for twenty-two and a half years. He was awarded the Air Force Good Conduct Medal with 4 Oak Leaf Clusters and the Air Force Longevity Service Award with 4 Oak Leaf Clusters. During his time in the Air Force, he and his family lived in various places throughout the United States as well as internationally. After John retired from the military he returned to Erwin with his family and began his seventeen-year career as a Chemical Operator with NFS.
John was a member of Ninth Street Baptist Church where he served as a Deacon for over forty years. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, watching sports, mowing his yard, and gardening. John was a loving and devoted husband, father, grandfather, and great grandfather.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister, Geraldine McCurry.
John leaves behind to cherish his memory, his wife of seventy-one years, Lola Jean Loyd Miller; his two daughters: Kathy Dianne Younger (Jeff) and Sherry Lynn Renfro (David), all of Erwin; four grandchildren: Rachel Peterson (Mark) of Jonesborough, Rebekah Renfro Edmonds (Kenneth) of Erwin, Jasen Younger (Mintie) of Johnson City and Kristen Younger Hoover (Adam) of Jonesborough; four great grandchildren: Ashlyn Mackley, Arabella Edmonds, Abbigail Edmonds and Haven Peterson; several nieces and nephews also survive.
The Miller family would like to extend their heartfelt appreciation to the staff of Amedisys Hospice, Becky, Mary, Keith and Brennan.
Mr. Miller's graveside service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, July 20, 2023 in the Mountain Home National Cemetery. Pastor Steve Rice will officiate. Military Honors will be rendered by Shaw Air Force Base. Those wishing to attend are asked to meet at the cemetery (historic site) by 10:55 a.m. Thursday.
