James King

James Wilford King, age 85, of Jonesborough, passed away on Monday, May 11, 2026, at the Johnson City Medical Center. He was a native of Burnsville, North Carolina and son of the late Clarence and Pauline Foster King. James lived most of his life in Jonesborough.

He was recruited by Iowa State University in 1958 to play Division One College Football. Also, James was the 1958 Horseshoe State Champion.

James was co-owner of The Elms Restaurant in Erwin for forty years. He retired from Rainbow Bread and ETSU.

James was a man of strong faith. He was a member and Deacon at Canah Chapel Freewill Baptist Church.

James was quite the storyteller, and he always enjoyed sharing his stories with others. He liked cooking, fishing and landscaping.

In addition to his parents, James was preceded in death by his wife of sixty years, Joan Byrd King; son, Jeff King, brother, Larry King; special nephew and godson, Christopher King.

James leaves behind to cherish his memory, his three grandchildren: Joy King, Riley White, and Edward White; brothers: Alvin King (Jodi) of Erwin, Gary King (Robin) of Unicoi; daughter-in-law, Victoria King of Erwin; brother-in-law, Harold Byrd (Mae Bell) of Flag Pond; sister-in-law, Diane Byrd of Jonesborough; special nephews: Pastor David Byrd and Nathan King; several other nieces and nephews also survive.

The family will receive friends from 12:00-1:00 p.m. on Friday, May 15, 2026, at Ninth Street Baptist Church. James’ funeral service will be held at 1:00 p.m. with Pastor David Byrd and Pastor Peter Layton officiating. Interment will follow in the Roselawn Memory Gardens with Pastor Mark Simmons officiating. Family and friends will serve as pallbearers.
