Hermes Samuel Mendez

Hermes Samuel Mendez, loving husband and father passed away at the age of 69 in Erwin, on Tuesday, March 30, 2021.

Hermes was born on June 12, 1951 to Cuban parents, Hermes Sr. and Hilda Mendez. He graduated from Greater Miami Academy in 1969, and went on to become a surgical technologist, before attending Southern Missionary College (Southern Adventist University), where he graduated with a B.S. degree in Biology minoring in theology in 1977. He later obtained his Master’s in Information Technology from Florida Institute of Technology in 2008. He taught in the Seventh-Day Adventist school system from 1977 to 1984, before moving to the Orange County Public Schools where he worked in Information and Communications Technology Services and retired as Senior Director of Human Resources in 2018. 

Hermes realized his lifelong dream of retiring to the Tennessee mountains. He was known for his quick wit, infectious laugh and propensity for jokes and pranks. Generous with his time, his love, his laughter, and his counsel, he enriched the lives of many.

Hermes is survived by his wife and best friend Sharon, his children David, Rachel, and Matthew; three brothers: Harody, Hugo and Lincoln, four grandsons and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins. He is preceded in death by his parents, Hermes Sr. and Hilda Mendez.

A memorial service will be given for Hermes on Sunday, April 11th at 3:00 PM at the Johnson City Seventh-day Adventist Church 1910 E Oakland Avenue, Johnson City, Tennessee 37601

Above all, Hermes was a servant of God and a true example of a life of service. He was active in spreading the gospel and looked forward to the soon return of our Heavenly Father.
