Helen Kay (Mathes) Hensley

Helen Kay Hensley, age 70, of Flag Pond, went to her heavenly home on Saturday, August 26, 2023. She was born on July 22, 1953 in Unicoi County to the late Clyde and Altha Hoyle Mathes.

Helen was a lifelong resident of Unicoi County. She was a homemaker. Helen was a member of Little Creek Baptist Church in Mars Hill, NC.  

Helen loved spending time with her grandkids and going shopping with her best friend Donna Moore. She enjoyed sewing, painting, and being with her family.

Helen leaves behind to cherish her memory, her husband of forty-six years, James “Brown” Hensley; one son, Bobby Hensley and fiancé Amanda Stills; one brother, Roger “Farrell” Mathes and wife Nancy, of Mars Hill, NC; four grandchildren: Emma Hensley, Carson Hensley, Maylin Owens, Haisley Stills; one niece, Melissa Mathes.

Helen’s family would like to extend a special thanks to: Omie Shelton, Janet Shelton, Tia Joyce, and the staff of Ballad Hospice for all their help and compassion shown to Helen and her family.

Helen’s family will receive friends on Tuesday, August 29, 2023, from 4:00 p.m. until 6:00 p.m. in the funeral home chapel. Funeral service will follow at 6:00 p.m. with Pastor Kermit Ball officiating. Music will be provided by Mary Ellen Davis. Family and friends will serve as pallbearers. Committal service will be held Wednesday, August 30, 2023 at 11:00 a.m. in the Metcalf-Rice Cemetery. Those wishing to attend are asked to meet at the cemetery by 10:55 a.m. on Wednesday.
