Gary Damon Harris, age 82, Erwin, passed away on Thursday, June 24, 2021 at the Center on Aging. He was a lifelong resident of Erwin and a son of the late Ralph and Bertie Hicks Harris.
Gary was a United States Marine Veteran. He was awarded the Good Conduct Medal. Gary retired from the Veterans Administration where he worked as a Nursing Assistant. He was a member of Lily Dale Church of Christ.
Gary was a welder, and he was an expert carpenter. He enjoyed cutting trees, gardening, small engine repair and building swing sets. Gary was known as the “Martin’s Creek Handyman.” He was always ready and willing to bush hog, mow, plow or help fix anything his neighbors needed. Gary liked spending time outdoors camping and fishing. He delighted in joking around and pulling pranks on his family and friends.
Survivors include his loving and devoted wife of fifty-nine years, Myra Lynn Powers Harris; three children: Lisa Tipton (John), Erwin, Joel Harris (Toni), Johnson City and Kerry Casteel (William), Erwin; three grandchildren: Annie Horn (Jamie), Iowa, Seth Honeycutt and Damon Harris, both of Erwin; two brothers: James Harris (Paula), Woodbine, NJ and Wesley Harris (Mary), Genesco, IL; several nieces and nephews also survive.
The family would like to extend a special thank you to our “Angels” on earth, the staff of Center on Aging, especially the Special Care Unit Staff.
A private entombment was held in the Evergreen Mausoleum.
