Dr. Michael Steven Briggs

Dr. Michael Steven Briggs, age 63, of Erwin, passed away on Tuesday, November 18, 2025, at University of Tennessee Medical Center. He lived most of his life in Erwin and is a son of the late Grady R. Briggs, Sr. and Rozella Robinette Briggs.

Michael earned his Doctorate in English from ETSU. He was a Professor in the Language Arts and Literature Department at ETSU for over thirty years. Dr. Briggs was dearly loved by his students and colleagues.

Michael was of the Baptist Faith. He was very active in the Unicoi County Democratic Party having formerly served as President. Michael enjoyed planting and working in his flowers. He loved his cats tremendously and all animals. Michael was very involved with the Unicoi County Animal Shelter and Humane Society.

In addition to his parents, Michael was preceded in death by one sister, Tobie Bledsoe.

Michael leaves behind to cherish his memory, one sister, Pat Crowe of Erwin; two brothers: Grady Raymond Briggs, Jr. of Erwin and Larry Briggs of Charlotte; two special friends: Jamie Rainey and Anne Philpot; several nieces and nephews also survive.

Michael’s services will be announced at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made in memory of Michael to the Unicoi County Animal Shelter P.O. Box 223, Erwin, TN 37650.
