Bonnie Lee Mallett Hogan, age 75, of Elizabethton, Tennessee, passed away unexpectedly on Tuesday, September 03, 2024, at Sycamore Shoals Hospital. Born in New York City, she was the daughter of the late Robert Mallett, Jr. and Eleanor Thomas Mallett.
Bonnie moved to East Tennessee in the early 1970’s, residing in Erwin before settling in Elizabethton. She was a dedicated Christian and a passionate human rights advocate. Bonnie participated in numerous protests advocating for justice and equality. She had a deep love for animals, particularly dogs and cats. Bonnie was committed to making the world a better place than she found it, in any way she could.
Bonnie was a talented seamstress specializing in costume design. She owned and operated the Costume Shoppe in Johnson City. Bonnie crafted costumes for Theatre Bristol and Johnson City Community Theatre. She loved the Halloween season, when she would help everyone find their perfect costume.
In addition to her work in costume design, Bonnie served as a substitute teacher in Unicoi County for many years, where her generosity, including handing out candy to students, was fondly remembered. She also coached Little League Softball and was actively involved with the UCHS Band Boosters, attending all her children’s sporting events and school activities. The band kids were all her extended kids, calling many “kiddo” for the rest of her life. Her commitment to children extended to fostering many kids over the years.
Bonnie is survived by, her two daughters: Valerie Lane (Heath) of Siloam Springs, Arkansas and Dawn Hogan (Justin Freeman) of Elizabethton; two grandchildren: Duncan Lane and Sara Lane; brother, Bob Mallett (Dianne) of Jonesborough; two sisters: Judy McKay (David Logan) of St. Pete Beach, Florida and Wendy Lantis (Bob) of Waynesville, North Carolina; several nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews also survive.
Bonnie’s memorial service will be held at a later date. In the meantime, online condolences, photos and memories may be shared with the Hogan family at www.ledfordfuneralhomes.com. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that you consider a donation to one of Bonnie’s favorite charities: St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital (stjude.org) or Trio Animal Foundation (trioanimalfoundation.org). Bonnie also would have loved for everyone to do something kind for someone else, to continue to make this world a better place.
