Bill Simmons, age 88, of Erwin, passed away on Wednesday, October 11, 2023, at Johnson City Medical Center following a lengthy illness. He was a lifelong resident of Unicoi County and a son of the late Clarence and Cona Vance Simmons.
Bill helped establish the former Erwin Emergency Rescue Squad and was a member for thirty-four years. He was a member of Grace United Methodist Church and attended Unicoi United Methodist Church until his health declined.
In addition to his parents, Bill was preceded in death by two brothers: Buddy and Buster Simmons; nephew, Kevin Higgins.
Survivors include his wife of fifty-five years, Alma Woodward Simmons; son, Alan Keith Simmons; granddaughters: Karen and LeAnna and their “little ones”; sister, Barbara Higgins; three nephews also survive.
The Simmons family will receive friends on Monday, October 16, 2023, from 5:00-7:00 p.m. at the Robert Ledford Funeral Home Chapel. Reverend Todd Adams and Dr. Mike Pinner will officiate the 7:00 p.m. funeral service. Committal will be held on Tuesday, October 17, 2023, at 11:00 a.m. in the Evergreen Cemetery. Active pallbearers will be Ashley Woodward, Terry Jones, Gaelen Bradford, Tony Jones, Taylor Jones, and Tyler Jones. Bill’s friends will serve as honorary pallbearers. Everyone is asked to meet at the funeral home by 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday to go in procession to the cemetery.
