Bertha Yvonne Byrd

Bertha Yvonne Byrd, age 85, of Erwin, went to be with her Lord and Savior, Jesus, on Sunday, August 20, 2023, while she was surrounded by her family. She is a daughter of the late John Lawrence Byrd, Sr. and Velva Willis Byrd. Bertha was a lifelong resident of Erwin.

Bertha worked at Boyd DeArmond Furniture Store until it closed. Then, she worked at Erwin Utilities as a clerk for many years until she retired. Bertha was of the Christian Faith.

She enjoyed gardening, tending her flowers and entertaining her family and friends. Bertha looked forward to cooking a delicious home cooked meal every Sunday evening for her family to gather around and enjoy her food. She liked to watch the birds and feed them. Bertha had a very generous, caring heart and she loved her family dearly.

In addition to her parents, Bertha was preceded in death by two brothers: John “J.L.” Byrd and Charles Cyle Byrd; four sisters: Robbie M. Byrd, Dorris Byrd, Olga Edwards and Joan Byrd King.

Bertha leaves behind to cherish many sweet memories, her brother, Harold Byrd and wife, Mae Bell of Flag Pond; brother-in-law, Jim King of Erwin; sister-in-law, Diana Byrd of Erwin; numerous nieces and nephews also survive.

The family would like to extend their appreciation to the Amedisys Hospice staff for the care given to Bertha and her family. Everyone who took time to visit Bertha and cook meals for her was greatly appreciated. Also, her special friend, Edna Willis, for writing and mailing a letter to Bertha every week. A very special thank you to Anneta Byrd for taking such wonderful care of Bertha when she needed it most.

The Byrd family will receive friends from 5:00-6:00 p.m. on Thursday, August 24, 2023, at the funeral home chapel. Pastor Charlie Byrd and Reverend Harold Lewis will officiate Bertha’s funeral service at 6:00 p.m. Committal will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Friday in the Evergreen Cemetery. Family and friends will serve as pallbearers. Everyone is asked to meet at the cemetery by 9:50 a.m. on Friday.
